KATHMANDU: Temperatures have dropped across Kathmandu Valley and various parts of the country, with the capital recording its lowest temperature of the season.
According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, Kathmandu’s minimum temperature fell by one degree Celsius over the past two days, reaching 3.5 degrees Celsius on Monday morning. On January 3, the minimum temperature stood at 4.5 degrees, while it was recorded at 4 degrees on Sunday.
Meteorologist Binu Maharjan said the temperature recorded on Monday is the lowest so far this year and is expected to continue declining throughout January. She added that temperatures have dropped in many parts of the country, not just Kathmandu.
With the onset of winter, temperatures nationwide have been on a downward trend, with a more noticeable decline during the second and third weeks. Kathmandu recorded a minimum temperature of 4.9 degrees on December 23, 2025, which dropped to 4.8 degrees on December 30, 4.6 degrees on January 1, and further to 4.5 degrees on January 3.
According to today’s records, Jumla has reported the lowest minimum temperature in the country at minus 6.3 degrees Celsius. On January 3, Jumla’s minimum temperature was minus 4.9 degrees.
Comparing the last two days’ data, Dadeldhura’s temperature dropped from 2.7 to 2.1 degrees, Dipayal from 6 to 4.4 degrees, Birendranagar from 5 to 3.8 degrees, Ghorahi from 8 to 5.7 degrees, Pokhara from 8.5 to 7.9 degrees, and Okhaldhunga from 4.9 to 4.3 degrees. Meanwhile, Taplejung, Simara and Dhankuta recorded a slight rise in temperature. Maximum temperatures across the country have remained below 22 degrees Celsius.
The department said fog, mist and cold wave conditions persist in the Tarai and are likely to continue, although weather is expected to clear gradually during the daytime. Some areas in the Himalayan region have reported snowfall, while rivers in certain locations have also frozen due to extreme cold.
