KATHMANDU: The Department of Immigration denied entry to 116 foreign nationals from 36 countries in 2025 and sent them back to their respective countries, citing violations of immigration laws and security concerns.
According to the Department, Indian and Chinese nationals accounted for the highest number of entry refusals. Foreigners were barred from entering Nepal for reasons including expired visas, past involvement in suspicious activities, criminal records, perceived threats to national security, or repeated violations of immigration rules.
During the same period, a total of 2,790 Nepali citizens were deported from 77 different countries and returned to Nepal. Malaysia topped the list with 498 deportations, followed by the United States with 462, the United Arab Emirates with 323, South Korea with 257, and Japan with 128.
The Department said Nepali nationals were deported for overstaying their visas, serving prison sentences after being convicted of crimes, residing illegally without valid visas, or engaging in activities contrary to immigration laws in host countries.
Similarly, 501 foreign nationals were deported from Nepal in 2025. Of them, 437 had overstayed in Nepal for more than 150 days on tourist visas, while the remaining 64 were found to be involved in various criminal activities.
The Department clarified that these foreign nationals were deported after completing their sentences for offenses such as staying in Nepal against the stated purpose of their visa, drug trafficking, human trafficking, organized crime, illegal foreign currency transactions, and disorderly conduct.
Director and spokesperson of the Department of Immigration, Tikaram Dhakal, said immigration laws are being enforced strictly and surveillance mechanisms will be further strengthened to ensure national security and uphold legal discipline.
