Temporary hall being prepared for National Assembly winter session after fire damage

KATHMANDU: With the construction of the new Parliament building inside Singha Durbar still incomplete, preparations have been intensified to arrange a temporary hall for the upcoming winter session of the National Assembly.

As the federal parliament building at New Baneshwor was set on fire during the Gen-Z protests and the new parliament complex inside Singha Durbar is yet to be completed, authorities have moved to repair and expand an existing meeting hall to ensure the National Assembly can convene on time.

The meeting hall of the House of Representatives’ Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee is currently being renovated and expanded to accommodate sessions of the National Assembly. Construction work is underway to modify the hall in line with parliamentary requirements.

Along with the main assembly hall, separate access routes are being prepared for the Chairperson of the National Assembly, the Prime Minister, ministers and lawmakers. Arrangements are also being made for a public gallery and designated seating for journalists.

Officials involved in the project said efforts are underway to complete construction and hand over the hall by December 30. Once structural work is completed, installation of microphones, cameras and other technical equipment will begin.

The temporary arrangement is being made to ensure the smooth functioning of the National Assembly until permanent parliamentary infrastructure is fully restored and operational.
