More people in Chitwan taking non-resident citizenship

CHITWAN: The number of people acquiring non-resident Nepali citizenship in Chitwan has surpassed those renouncing their Nepali citizenship. Since last July, 40 individuals have given up their citizenship, while 49 have obtained non-resident citizenship.

Assistant Chief District Officer Chiranjivi Sharma noted that among those renouncing citizenship, 13 are women and 27 are men. He explained that many individuals renounce their Nepali citizenship upon returning to Nepal in order to obtain non-resident citizenship.

Since July, 20 women and 29 men in the district have successfully secured non-resident citizenship. To acquire it, applicants must fill out the office form, submit photocopies of their passport and foreign citizenship, provide a renunciation certificate, and have the documents verified by a relative or acquaintance.

Sharma also mentioned that Nepalis living abroad often seek non-resident citizenship to facilitate investments in Nepal. Meanwhile, the citizenship of two individuals in the district has been revoked due to holding dual citizenship or engaging in anti-state activities.

Since July, 3,759 individuals have received citizenship by descent, and 11 have obtained it through marriage, according to the district office.
