PM Karki stresses need to preserve traditions

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister (PM) Sushila Karki has urged Nepalis to preserve their traditional culture and attire, saying that while harmful practices should be discarded, the essence of original customs must be maintained.

She emphasized that while harmful practices within cultures should be eliminated, original traditions and traditional attire should not be abandoned.

The Prime Minister made the remarks while meeting a delegation of the Tamu Hyul Chhonj Dhi Gurung National Council on Friday.

Members of the council were dressed in traditional Gurung attire during the meeting. Praising their costumes, Prime Minister Karki expressed the view that government employees could wear their traditional attire in government offices, even if only one day a week.

According to the Prime Minister’s Secretariat, she said, “Some societies today are in search of their identity. In the name of modernity, they are forgetting their originality. They do not know what their identity is. But we Nepalis have a strong sense of identity. We possess diverse and original cultures and traditions, which must be preserved. Should we not consider making arrangements to wear such attire one or two days a week in government offices?”

On the occasion, Council General Secretary Raju Gurung invited the Prime Minister to attend a special program related to Tamu Lhosar, scheduled to be held on December 30.
