KATHMANDU: Nepal Police have intensified security preparations for the upcoming House of Representatives elections to be held on March 5, 2026, by implementing the Integrated Security Plan to ensure a free, fair, fearless, and credible polling environment.
In view of the elections, Nepal Police have strengthened manpower mobilization and management. Central Spokesperson and Deputy Inspector General of Police Abhinarayan Kafle said the force is committed to conducting the elections in line with directives from the Election Commission, making maximum use of available resources.
Kafle stated that election-focused patrolling has been expanded and made more effective. So far, police have conducted 1,366 long-distance patrols and 389,960 short-distance patrols, deploying a total of 1,346,328 personnel. Patrol intensity is being increased daily to curb election-related vandalism, arson, and other disruptive activities.
“To ensure a fear-free environment, Nepal Police are carrying out regular patrols alongside information gathering, threat assessment, analysis, and effective intelligence sharing,” Kafle said. He added that regular monitoring and targeted operations are underway in border areas to prevent infiltration and criminal activities.
According to Nepal Police, comprehensive security strategies have been adopted to protect candidates, voters, political party leaders, high-profile individuals, election observers, media personnel, election campaigns, and victory processions. Special security measures have also been put in place for sensitive and key installations.
Police have further intensified monitoring and action against anti-election activities, illegal and extortion-based fundraising, threats, disorderly conduct, criminal acts, and hooliganism. To address potential risks posed by looted or missing weapons from past protests, a special team has been formed to identify and recover such arms, as well as to arrest escaped prisoners and detainees.
As part of the Integrated Security Plan approved by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Nepal Police have also established a Central Election Cell under the leadership of Additional Inspector General of Police Uma Prasad Chaturvedi, head of the Operations Division at Police Headquarters, to oversee and coordinate all election-related security preparations.
