The Nepali Congress (NC) has decided to hold its 15th General Convention in Kathmandu from January 10 to 12 after nearly six weeks of internal negotiations. While the party has announced the schedule as a regular convention, disputes related to the earlier proposal of a special convention remain unresolved. Following the publication of the schedule, party President Sher Bahadur Deuba held a meeting with Vice-President Purna Bahadur Khadka. According to Khadka’s secretariat, Deuba assured full support in the upcoming convention.

Sudan Gurung claims Balen–Kulman alliance, reaches out to jailed RSP chief for broader unity

Sudan Gurung has claimed that Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah and Energy Minister and Ujyalo Nepal Party patron Kulman Ghising have already reached a political understanding. Gurung said he played a role in bringing the two leaders together, adding that he has now begun talks with the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) to push for a broader alliance among alternative political forces. According to him, he visited RSP Chair Rabi Lamichhane at Nakkhu Jail on Thursday as part of his commitment made during the Gen-Z movement to facilitate unity among emerging political actors.

Bhatbhateni warehouse reopens three months after Gen-Z movement arson

Bhatbhateni Supermarket has resumed operations of its warehouse three months after it was damaged during the vandalism, looting, and arson incidents linked to the Gen-Z movement. The main warehouse in Baluwatar was formally reopened today following a ‘rudri’ ritual. The retail chain, regarded as Nepal’s largest supermarket brand, had suffered losses amounting to nearly Rs 12 billion across its 12 stores during the unrest. The warehouse has resumed operations following reconstruction and repair of damaged structures, storage systems, and inventory management facilities.

Talks held in Gundu over UML representative dispute

Senior Vice Chair Ishwar Pokharel and several other leaders of the CPN-UML visited party chair KP Sharma Oli in Gundu, Bhaktapur, on Thursday to discuss the ongoing dispute over representative selection. According to sources, the leaders held discussions with Oli for about an hour and a half. They urged him to resolve the dispute promptly and move forward.

Congress leaders backing special general convention warn against attempts to postpone the event

Nepali Congress leaders who have signed in support of holding a special general convention have warned the party leadership not to engage in any conspiracy to postpone the upcoming general convention. Speaking at an interaction program held in Kathmandu on Thursday regarding preparations for the party’s 15th General Convention, the leaders said that if the regular general convention is obstructed, a special general convention will automatically come into effect. They cautioned the leadership not to attempt to defer the event.

NC bars sitting National Assembly, Provincial Assembly members from candidacy in upcoming polls

The Nepali Congress has decided not to nominate sitting members of the National Assembly and Provincial Assemblies as candidates in the upcoming National Assembly and House of Representatives elections. The party’s central secretariat has clarified that those currently holding seats in the National Assembly or Provincial Assemblies will not be eligible for recommendation in the new round of candidacies.

Kathmandu Gorkhas seal playoff berth with 13-run win over Pokhara Avengers

Kathmandu Gorkhas have confirmed their spot in the Nepal Premier League (NPL) Season 2 playoffs after defeating Pokhara Avengers by 13 runs in Thursday’s first match at the TU International Cricket Stadium. With the loss, Pokhara Avengers are now all but out of contention for the playoffs. Chasing a target of 166 runs, Pokhara Avengers were restricted to 152 in their 20 overs. Shabab Alam starred for Kathmandu, taking a total of six wickets, including a last-over hat-trick that saw him claim four crucial wickets to seal the win. Despite a promising start, the Avengers struggled to build partnerships and kept losing wickets at regular intervals.

Women’s T20 World Cup: Nepal announces preliminary team for global qualifier

The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) on Thursday announced the preliminary 26-member women’s cricket team for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Global Qualifier, set to be held in Nepal from January 12 to February 1, 2026. The team includes Indu Barma, Rajmati Airee, Sita Rana Magar, Samjhana Khadka, Kabita Joshi, Riya Sharma, Somu Bista, Rachana Chaudhary, Rubi Podar, Pooja Mahato, Kabita Kunwar, Rubina Kshetry, Sana Prabin, Alisha Yadav, Iswori Bista, Roma Thapa, Soni Pakhrin, Bindu Rawal, Laxmi Saud, Manisha Upadhyay, Simana KC, Anu Kadayat, Kajol Shrestha, Kiran Kunwar, Asmina Karmacharya, and Mamata Chaudhary.

Security tightened at Kailali border with India

Security checks have been intensified at the Nepal–India border in Kailali district. According to Shivraj Joshi, Information Officer at the District Administration Office, the stricter screening is aimed at preventing unauthorized entry of suspicious individuals or groups from India. “Security measures have been tightened in view of potential threats,” Joshi said. “If any suspicious person or group is spotted entering the district, people are requested to immediately inform nearby security agencies and cooperate with them.”

Kathmandu traffic police enforce strict new rules for long-distance buses

To curb the worsening traffic congestion in the Kathmandu Valley, traffic police have implemented stricter regulations for long-distance public bus services. Under the new system, all long-distance buses, whether day or night services, are now required to depart exclusively from designated bus parks. The move comes after authorities observed that these vehicles were increasingly stopping along roadsides like local buses, picking up and dropping off passengers at random points, especially during peak hours, causing severe traffic jams.

Kanti Highway to remain closed for 60 days from December 6 for road expansion

The Kanti Highway in Lalitpur is set to remain closed for 60 days starting December 6 to facilitate road expansion works, according to officials. Upendra Maharjan, Information Officer and Engineer at the Kanti Highway Road Project, said the highway is undergoing an upgrade that requires rock cutting and wall excavation, necessitating partial closure.

Gold, silver prices dip slightly in Nepal

Gold and silver prices in Nepal have shown a slight decline today compared to Wednesday. According to the Federation of Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers’ Association, the price of one tola of gold is Rs 253,300, while silver is trading at Rs 3,625 per tola.

Identity of man found dead with bicycle in Dhobikhola confirmed

Police have identified the man whose body was discovered along with a bicycle in the Dhobikhola stream on Thursday morning. According to SP Pawan Kumar Bhattarai of Kathmandu Police Range, the body was found near the Rudramati bridge in Kathmandu Metropolitan City-29. The deceased has been identified as Lalit Giri, a permanent resident of Mandandeupur Municipality-1 in Kavrepalanchok.
