UML leaders question PM on restrictions against KP Sharma Oli

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Sushila Karki has held her first direct political dialogue with the CPN-UML following the changed political situation after the Gen-Z movement.

UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel, Deputy General Secretary Pradeep Gyawali, and former Chief Whip Mahesh Bartoula met the Prime Minister at Baluwatar for talks.

During the meeting, UML leaders raised concerns about what they call “media trials” against the party and its leaders. Most notably, they questioned the decision to restrict the movement of former Prime Minister and UML Chair KP Sharma Oli.

The UML delegation argued that preventing a major party leader from interacting with the public is against democratic norms, especially when elections have already been announced for March 5.

Bartoula said the Prime Minister did not directly respond to their questions. However, he claimed she took the concerns positively.

This was the first meeting between the government and the UML since Karki dissolved the House and announced early elections shortly after assuming office in late August.

Prime Minister Karki has continued to express the view that KP Sharma Oli, Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, and Nepali Communist Party Coordinator Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda” should step back from politics.
