Bagmati Corridor set for smart lighting and CCTV surveillance upgrade

KATHMANDU: The Bagmati Civilization Integrated Development Committee is set to install smart lighting and advanced CCTV surveillance along the Bagmati River corridor from Gokarna to Balkhu. The initiative aims to improve security, curb illegal activities, and support waste-management efforts in the area.

According to the Committee, the corridor has increasingly faced waste-disposal problems, unauthorized activities, and security challenges. To address these, modern CCTV surveillance systems and high-mast smart lighting technology will be installed along the riverbanks.

A tender notice has already been issued to select construction contractors for installing the lighting and CCTV systems. Waste disposal into the river will be monitored via CCTV, enabling quick action by authorities.

A total of 120 advanced cameras, capable of operating day and night and resistant to heat, dust, and water, will be installed. Their servers and monitoring units will be placed at the Kathmandu Valley Police Office.

To improve nighttime visibility, the project will set up 567 smart streetlights, 48 floodlights, and six high-mast floodlights across darker stretches of the corridor.

Officials believe that the installation of CCTV cameras and lighting will support the ongoing Bagmati Cleanliness Mega Campaign and enhance safety, monitoring, and the prevention of criminal or disorderly activities. The overall goal is to create a safe, orderly, and well-lit environment along the river corridor.
