Nepali Congress registers party with Election Commission

The Nepali Congress (NC) has officially registered its party with the Election Commission (EC) to participate in the upcoming National Assembly and House of Representatives elections. According to Nepali Congress Chief Secretary Krishna Prasad Paudel, the party registration application was submitted at 11 am today (Sunday). “As per the party’s decision, we have registered to contest both the National Assembly and House of Representatives elections,” he stated.

SC orders written response in contempt case against PM Karki

The Supreme Court (SC) has directed a written response in the contempt case filed against Prime Minister (PM) Sushila Karki. The case arises from a writ petition alleging that the government recalled ambassadors from 13 countries in contempt of the Supreme Court’s earlier order. The petition was heard on Sunday by a bench of Justices Hari Prasad Phuyal and Abdul Azij Musalman.

Supreme Court orders release of Durga Prasai

The Supreme Court has ordered the release of Durga Prasai, coordinator of the Rashtra, Rashtriyata, Dharma, Sanskriti Nagarik Bachau Mahaabhiyan. A division bench of Justices Nahakul Subedi and Shreekant Paudel issued the order on Sunday while hearing a habeas corpus petition filed at the court. Earlier on Thursday, the Supreme Court had directed authorities to present Prasai before the court within 24 hours along with reasons for his detention. Justice Meghraj Pokharel’s bench had instructed the authorities to submit the basis and grounds for holding the medical entrepreneur in custody.

A group of pro-monarchy demonstrators chanted slogans in front of injured Gen-Z protesters gathered at Maitighar Mandala in Kathmandu. The situation briefly grew tense after the group began shouting “We want a king,” leading to an exchange of words between the two sides. Police deployed at the scene intervened and prevented both groups from escalating the dispute.

JSP led by Ashok Rai splits; six leaders including Rajendra Shrestha set to join NCP

The Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) led by Ashok Rai has split. The division occurred over internal disagreements on whether to pursue unity with a Madhesh-based party or with the Nepali Communist Party (NCP). A faction of leaders, amid escalating differences, has decided to merge with the NCP led by coordinator Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’. The dispute intensified to the point where Federal Council Chair Rajendra Shrestha and five other leaders chose to leave the JSP and integrate into the NCP.

Home Ministry moves to final stage of procuring vehicles for election security

The Ministry of Home Affairs has advanced to the final stage of procuring essential vehicles for all three security agencies, under the direction of Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal, to ensure a peaceful, fear-free and independent environment for the upcoming House of Representatives elections. Following the ministry’s initiative, the Ministry of Finance has also expedited the procurement process for critical vehicles that were completely destroyed during the recent Gen-Z protests.

Reconstruction begins on damaged BP Highway

Permanent reconstruction of the BP Highway, which was damaged by repeated floods and landslides, has begun. The Divisional Road Office, Bhaktapur, stated that reconstruction work has started on three key sections of the highway, a vital route connecting the eastern and mid-hilly regions of Nepal with the federal capital, Kathmandu. About 30 kilometers of the highway in Kavrepalanchowk and Sindhuli were damaged by floods and landslides in the last week of September last year and the first week of October this year. While the road had been temporarily reopened, permanent reconstruction is now underway.

Pragatisheel Loktantrik Party announced

The Pragatisheel Loktantrik Party was formally announced on Sunday in Kathmandu following the unification of Dr. Baburam Bhattarai-led Nepal Samajwadi Party (Naya Shakti), Janardan Sharma’s Pragatisheel Rastriya Abhiyan, and Santosh Pariyar, who recently left the Rastriya Swatantra Party. Former Prime Minister Dr. Bhattarai officially unveiled the party’s name during the program and will serve in a guardian role.

Import delays as Kerung border remains closed for 5 months

Nepali businessmen are facing difficulties as the Kerung border crossing with China has remained closed for the past five months. The closure began after floods in the Lhende River on July 8, 2025, washed away the Miteri River bridge in Rasuwagadhi. As a result, clothes and other goods have been stranded at the border. Former president of the National Trade Association, Saroj Kumar Shrestha, said nearly 200 containers of goods imported from China for Dashain are still stuck at Kerung. “Materials imported in August are still stranded, causing serious disruptions,” he said.

44 parties register with EC for March 5 HoR election

A total of 44 parties have registered at the Election Commission (EC), as of today, to participate in the upcoming House of Representatives elections scheduled for March 5, 2026, of which 10 are new. The Election Commission has stated that parties wishing to participate can register from November 17 to 26, leaving only four days (including today) for registration.

Asian Cup Qualifiers: Nepal defeated by Syria

Nepal lost to Syria in their opening match of the AFC U-17 Asian Cup qualifiers. Nepal was defeated 4–2 by Syria in the match held on Saturday at Thuwunna Stadium in Yangon, Myanmar. Placed in Group ‘G’, Nepal will face Oman on Monday, followed by matches against Afghanistan and hosts Myanmar.

Protesters splash red ink on Mahesh Basnet’s car in Biratnagar

Youths sprayed red ink on CPN-UML leader Mahesh Basnet’s car in Biratnagar, Morang. The youths reportedly ran from the roadside and threw red ink at the vehicle carrying Basnet, which was following a police van. Basnet was on his way to Sunsari to participate in the Koshi Province–level gathering of the party when the incident occurred on the Airport Line road. The vehicle was stopped immediately after the ink was thrown. Police have taken two youths into custody: 19-year-old Arijit Kunwar of Biratnagar-2 and 25-year-old Sanjog Gautam of Biratnagar-1. They are being held at the District Police Office, Morang.

Gold and silver prices rise slightly

gold and silver increased slightly in the local market today, influenced by growing demand and rising rates in the international market. According to the Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers Federation, the price of one tola of gold has been set at Rs 244,600 today. Last Friday, gold was traded at Rs 241,700 per tola.

Unlawful force used during Gen-Z protest: Human Rights Watch

Human Rights Watch (HRW), the international human rights watchdog, has concluded that Nepali security forces used “unlawful, unnecessary, and disproportionate” force during the Gen-Z protests held on September 8. In its newly released study, HRW states that protesters were fired upon repeatedly for nearly three hours on September 8, describing the shooting as indiscriminate. The organization also noted that extensive arson and looting occurred the following day, although many of those involved were not directly linked to the Gen-Z protest movement.
