PM Sushila Karki convenes National Security Council meeting amid rising security concerns

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Sushila Karki has called a meeting of the National Security Council following rising security sensitivities in Bara and other parts of the country.

The meeting comes at a time when the Nepali Congress and CPN-UML have expressed concerns that the March 5 elections could be affected by the deteriorating security environment. The Council meeting is being held on Thursday afternoon at the NSC Secretariat in Singha Durbar.

According to sources, the meeting is reviewing recent incidents, the overall security situation, the election environment, and the preparedness of security agencies.

Tensions have escalated in Simara, Bara, where authorities imposed a curfew on Wednesday after clashes between UML-affiliated National Youth Association cadres and Gen-Z protesters. The administration extended the curfew until 8 pm Thursday after Gen-Z demonstrators intensified their protest demanding action.

Following the volatile situation in Simara and growing concerns among political parties about peace, security, and a reliable election environment, the Prime Minister called the Council meeting. Earlier on Wednesday evening, the Home Ministry held a preliminary meeting to assess the security situation.
