Prasai supporters surround DAO Kathmandu after his midnight arrest

KATHMANDU: Supporters of Durga Prasai surrounded the District Administration Office (DAO) Kathmandu on Tuesday following his arrest.

The protest erupted shortly after authorities decided to move forward with an investigation against Prasai under charges of disturbing public peace.

According to police, Prasai is being presented at the Kathmandu DAO through the Office of the Government Attorney in Babarmahal. Kathmandu Police have already filed a case against him for public-offense-related charges.

Prasai was arrested at midnight on Monday from his residence in Thimi, Bhaktapur, by a joint team of Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office and Kathmandu District Police Range.

Police said the arrest was made after assessing that Prasai’s recent remarks, which they believe could incite unrest, carried a high risk of triggering violence. Officers entered his home using a ladder before taking him into custody.

Prasai had announced a nationwide protest starting November 23, threatening to shut down highways and halt the ongoing NPL cricket tournament. Officials said his warning to disrupt the NPL made security agencies take the matter seriously.

He was detained following discussions at the Security Council meeting, after which police initiated action.
