KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress Deputy General Secretary Farmullah Mansoor has proposed General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa as the party’s future president and the next prime ministerial candidate.
Speaking at the party’s Central Working Committee meeting held in Sanepa on Wednesday, Mansur said the time had come for the new generation, led by Thapa, to take charge of the party.
“There is a growing call within the party that Gagan Kumar Thapa should lead as both the prime minister and party president,” Mansoor said, urging the leadership to listen to and evaluate this sentiment.
Mansoor also suggested that the party should take the proposal for a special general convention positively. According to him, organizing a special convention is not new for the Congress and can be conducted within ten days if necessary.
“This decision is an opportunity for the Congress,” Mansur said. “The party should embrace the special convention, and afterward, we can move ahead toward the election scheduled for March 5.”
Recalling his own political experience, Mansoor said, “I was the district president in 2050 BS. Because of my closeness to Girija Prasad Koirala, Krishna Prasad removed me. But even now, I emphasize the need to listen to the people’s voice.”
Mansur noted that Gagan Thapa emerged as a popular leader during the party’s 14th General Convention. “He was established as a popular leader in that convention, and now 54 percent of the representatives have stood in support of his call for a special convention,” he said.
He further urged party members to prioritize unity, new thinking, and youth leadership, and to formally advance Gagan Thapa as the official candidate of the Nepali Congress for the upcoming elections.
