Youth arrested for involvement in arson at Singha Durbar and Parliament building



KATHMANDU: Police have arrested a youth accused of involvement in vandalism, arson, and looting around the Singha Durbar area during the Gen Z movement protests on September 9.

According to Kathmandu District Police, 18-year-old Shivam Chaudhary Yadav, a resident of Bateshwar Rural Municipality-5 in Dhanusha and currently living in Mahalaxmi Municipality-3, Lalitpur, was taken into custody.

Police said Yadav was involved in the vandalism and arson targeting the Singha Durbar and Parliament buildings, as well as the Baneshwor Police Circle premises and vehicles during the protest.

He was also found to have looted and misused police uniforms and traffic police wheel locks. Based on video evidence, police stated that Yadav verbally abused on-duty officers and incited the crowd to attack security personnel.

Police have launched further investigations to identify and arrest others involved in the incident. Kathmandu District Police spokesperson, Superintendent of Police Pawan Kumar Bhattarai, said all those involved will be brought under the law.

The September 8–9 demonstrations saw arson and vandalism of government properties from the Singha Durbar area to New Baneshwor. Police are analyzing video footage, social media content, and eyewitness statements to identify the culprits.
