PM Karki says corruption probes prompt reactions from political leaders

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Sushila Karki has said that several political leaders have begun making public statements in response to ongoing corruption investigations initiated by her administration.

The remarks came after victims of the Gen-Z protests of September 8–9 pressed the government to take strict action against officials involved in both corruption and the suppression of the demonstrations. The meeting at Baluwatar lasted more than four hours on Tuesday.

Karki indicated that CPN-UML Chair KP Sharma Oli has been particularly vocal since government agencies began probing allegations against leaders implicated in wrongdoing.

“The investigations will be conducted seriously and impartially against both those who suppressed the Gen-Z movement and those involved in corruption,” Karki said. “We do not act beyond the spirit of the Gen-Z movement. We operate within the legal framework and follow proper processes. Mandates will be respected, both elections and corruption investigations will proceed.”

The prime minister highlighted that state institutions are actively pursuing corruption probes and that ongoing scrutiny will yield results. “You have been pressing us to act, and we will. Continue to raise your voices; continue to apply pressure. Action is being taken,” she told the Gen-Z victims.

Targeting Oli, Karki added, “You will see results soon. Those under investigation are reacting—some statements have already been made, I’m sure you’ve noticed.”

Oli, in a press conference in Kathmandu two days ago, had accused the Karki-led government of acting unconstitutionally and of seeking revenge. He criticized the government for allegedly restricting his movement by withholding his passport and refused to testify before the commission led by Gauri Bahadur Karki, which was formed under the same administration.

Karki reaffirmed that the government remains committed to impartial investigations and that accountability measures against those involved in corruption or the suppression of protests will continue without interference.
