BP Highway reopens after five days

KAVRE: The BP Highway has reopened in one direction following the construction of a four-kilometer diversion along the Kathmandu–Chauki Danda–Barkhekhola–Nepalthok section.

According to Information Officer Sumanraj Basnet of the Road Division Office, all stranded vehicles, including those from Sindhuli, Mahabharat Rural Municipality, and surrounding settlements, have passed through the newly opened track. “Small and large vehicles of all kinds have now moved through,” Basnet said.

However, Basnet noted that the road surface remains uneven and could pose challenges for vehicles. “We’ll work overnight using graders and rollers to level the track. If there’s no additional damage, traffic should resume without interruption starting tomorrow,” Basnet added.

Last year, it took 15 days to restore traffic after floods washed away eight kilometers of the highway. This year, the affected four-kilometer stretch between Nepalthok and Dhulikhel has been restored more swiftly. Of the 22 kilometers damaged last year, three sections on the Dhulikhel–Sindhuli–Bardibas route are already operational.

The restoration work was expedited following an on-site inspection by Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport Kulman Ghising, who instructed teams to accelerate repairs, even working through Thursday night.

Flooding from the Roshi River had washed away significant portions of the road last Asoj. Reconstruction has been divided into three separate contracts.
