Vice President stresses respect and support for senior citizens

KATHMANDU: Vice President Ramsahay Prasad Yadav has emphasized that families must view their elderly members not merely as dependents in need of care but as pillars of strength and wisdom within the household.

In a message marking the International Day of Older Persons on October 1, Yadav underscored the moral responsibility of the younger generation to honor, empathize with, and remain sensitive toward senior citizens.

“Respect, compassion, and sensitivity toward the elderly are not only moral conduct but also the duty and responsibility of the youth,” the Vice President stated. He urged young people to ensure the active involvement of seniors in family life, to value their advice, and to encourage their participation in social activities. He also highlighted the importance of supporting seniors in accessing digital literacy, healthcare, and other essential services.

Yadav described the International Day of Older Persons as a reminder of society’s collective duty toward the elderly. He noted that the experiences, sacrifices, and dedication of older generations continue to guide society.

“They are symbols of our cultural, social, and moral heritage. Honoring their contributions is not only our responsibility but also a reflection of our civilization,” he said.

Calling for a shift in perspective, Yadav stressed that senior citizens should be regarded as a “source of wisdom, not a burden.” He called for the development of elderly-friendly infrastructure and service systems, stronger social security measures, community-based support for single seniors, and focused attention on their mental health and dignity.
