BHAKTAPUR: The CPN-UML has called a central committee meeting for October 13 and 14 to discuss the latest political developments.
According to Deputy General Secretary and spokesperson Pradeep Gyawali, the Secretariat meeting held Sunday in Gundu, Bhaktapur, made the decision. He added that a Secretariat meeting on October 5 and 6 will finalize the agenda for the central committee.
Gyawali hinted that the party may soon convene a national general convention, depending on the central committee’s decision. The Secretariat also paid tribute to those who lost their lives in the Gen-Z protests and wished the injured a speedy recovery, while urging action against those involved in violence, vandalism, and arson.
Gyawali further expressed “serious concern” over reports that the probe commission investigating the Bhadra 23–24 incidents had ordered the suspension of Chair KP Sharma Oli’s passport. He criticized the move, saying that “a media trial orchestrated through the Home Ministry has already raised questions about the credibility of the commission.”
He accused the government of attempting to bypass political parties altogether. “It is not only sidelining political parties but also prohibiting them, avoiding contact and dialogue,” he said, “These events deeply worry us.”
Gyawali also alleged that the government’s instruction not to arrest those involved in arson and vandalism amounted to interference in the Nepal Police’s lawful jurisdiction and encouraged impunity.
He added that threats of physical attacks against some leaders further exposed the government’s intent. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Gyawali remarked, “Some are saying old political parties will not even be allowed to contest elections. Can such statements ensure elections? Would elections held under such circumstances have legitimacy?”
