International Chamber of Commerce offers support for Bhat-Bhateni Supermarket reconstruction

KATHMANDU: The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Nepal has offered to assist in rebuilding the Bhat-Bhateni Supermarket damaged during the Gen-Z protests, which involved vandalism and arson.

During a Sunday meeting at the damaged Bhat-Bhateni warehouse in Baluwatar, ICC Nepal Chair Rajesh Kaji Shrestha assured Bhat-Bhateni Chair Min Bahadur Gurung that business leaders would facilitate the supply of locally produced construction materials such as steel rods, cement, tiles, and paints at factory prices.

Shrestha emphasized that industries and businesses must contribute during such crises, reflecting a tradition of generosity and solidarity. He also urged banks and insurance companies to expedite settlement and financial processes to support Bhat-Bhateni’s reconstruction.

ICC Nepal officials and executive committee members attended the meeting.

The Gen-Z protests on September 9 caused significant damage to Bhat-Bhateni’s outlets, with 12 of its 28 branches affected by looting, arson, and vandalism, resulting in preliminary estimated losses of around Rs. 5 billion.

Despite the losses, Chair Gurung expressed determination to rebuild stronger, highlighting Bhat-Bhateni’s continuous contributions to consumers, society, and the nation since 1984.

Bhat-Bhateni generates over Rs 1.8 billion in annual revenue and provides employment to more than 10,000 people. The supermarket has also supported public welfare projects, including donating Rs 9.5 crore to Teaching Hospital, Rs 41 crore to a children’s hospital under Dr. Bhagwan Koirala, and Rs 1.11 crore to flood and landslide victims.

The company has been recognized three times as the country’s top taxpayer, maintaining its reputation as Nepal’s largest and leading supermarket chain, expanding branches across Kathmandu and other major cities while earning consumers’ trust.
