DAR ES SALAAM: The number of people killed by ongoing heavy rains in Tanzania has risen from 11 to 29, police said on Wednesday night as the east African nation’s weather watchdog renewed alert over continued torrential rains.
Edward Bukombe, Tanga regional police commander, told the national broadcaster, Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation, 18 people were killed by flash floods caused by heavy rains in the past two days in the region located along the Indian Ocean coast.
On Tuesday, police said at least 11 people, including five pupils, were killed by ongoing heavy rains in Tanzania’s eastern region of Morogoro.
Bukombe said the 18 victims were swept by flash floods in Korogwe, Handeni, Kilindi and Pangani districts.
He added that the rains have also damaged crops in farms and infrastructure, including roads and bridges, in the region.
A weather forecast released by TMA said the rains were expected in Dar es Salaam, Coast, Tanga and Zanzibar’s twin Islands of Unguja and Pemba.
The forecast indicated that houses in some parts of the regions could be submerged by flash floods, adding that infrastructure could also be damaged.
