NC calls arson at Singha Durbar an anarchic attack

KATHMANDU: The Nepali Congress has branded the arson and vandalism at Singha Durbar and other state structures during last month’s Gen-Z protests as the work of anarchic elements, calling for a high-level judicial probe into the violence.

At a meeting of its Central Working Committee in Sanepa on Friday, the party condemned the destruction of hundreds of government offices and private properties.

“Everyone has the right to peaceful protest, but the violent incidents caused deaths and injuries. The government must ensure free treatment for the injured and bring those responsible under the legal framework,” said Nepali Congress spokesperson Min Bahadur Bishwakarma.

The party stressed that the attacks on Singha Durbar, the nation’s key administrative hub, and on the executive, judiciary, and legislature amounted to a direct assault on Nepal’s democratic system. Bishwakarma also condemned the arson at leaders’ private homes and public structures.

While denouncing the violence, Nepali Congress acknowledged that the Gen-Z movement had raised legitimate concerns. Bishwakarma said the party is ready to address those demands “formally and constitutionally.”

“The current political crisis must be resolved within the framework of the constitution,” he added. “For that, Nepali Congress will engage in dialogue with other political forces to safeguard democracy.”

The September 8 and 9 protests left extensive damage, with Singha Durbar burning for days before authorities regained control. The destruction has sparked debate over state preparedness and accountability, even as parties grapple with the demands of the youth-led movement.
