Kulman Ghising asks Nepalis at home and abroad to help rebuild buldings damaged in Gen-Z protest

KATHMANDU: Minister for Energy, Physical Planning, and Urban Development Kulman Ghising has announced the establishment of a special fund to finance the reconstruction of infrastructure damaged during the recent Gen-Z protests, which he estimates have caused losses exceeding Rs 200 billion.

Speaking on Friday at the Transport Management Department in Minbhawan, Ghising highlighted the importance of mobilizing both local and diaspora communities in restoring the affected structures. “The damage to roads, bridges, public buildings, and other key infrastructure is unprecedented. To rebuild effectively, we need the collective effort of Nepalis at home and abroad,” he said.

The fund will rely on a combination of voluntary labor and financial contributions from citizens. Ghising stressed that diaspora involvement is critical, noting that the support of Nepalis living overseas will play a decisive role in accelerating reconstruction and ensuring projects meet quality and safety standards.

He also urged citizens to participate in the “We Build Nepal’s Infrastructure Ourselves” campaign, a nationwide initiative aimed at repairing and revitalizing infrastructure damaged during the protests. “This is not just about rebuilding structures; it is about restoring public confidence and demonstrating the resilience of our nation,” Ghising said.

The minister’s announcement comes amid widespread concern over the scale of the destruction, which preliminary assessments suggest has affected hundreds of roads, bridges, and other public facilities across the country. The government has emphasized transparency in the management of the fund and has called on both private and public sectors to contribute to the effort.

Ghising further encouraged the government to prioritize timely and efficient reconstruction while maintaining safety and quality standards, warning that delays could prolong economic losses and public inconvenience.

The initiative also signals a new approach in Nepal, combining government oversight with community participation and diaspora support to rebuild essential infrastructure after nationwide unrest.
