28th Ganeshman Singh Memorial Day being observed today

KATHMANDU: The 28th Ganeshman Singh Memorial Day is being observed today, honoring the legacy of the supreme commander of Nepal’s 1990 People’s Movement and his pivotal role in restoring democracy.

Widely regarded as a symbol of sacrifice and courage in Nepali politics, Singh became an enduring source of inspiration following the success of the 1990 democratic revolution. Born on 24 Kartik 1972 BS in Chaksibari, Chhetrapati, Kathmandu, Singh passed away on 2 Asoj 2054 BS.

Hailing from a noble family, Singh began his political journey as a member of Praja Parishad, Nepal’s first political party established in 1997 BS, dedicated to ending the autocratic Rana regime.

He spent several years in prison for his democratic activism and later joined BP Koirala in exile in India. Together, they founded the Nepali National Congress in 2003 BS, which later merged into the Nepali Congress.

Singh served as a senior minister following Nepal’s first-ever parliamentary elections in 2015 BS and played a key role in the 2036 BS student movement and the national referendum that followed.

To mark the 28th Memorial Day, various commemorative programs are being organized by the Nepali Congress and its sister organizations. The events began this morning with a wreath-laying ceremony at Singh’s statue in Shobha Bhagwati, Kathmandu.
