CHITWAN: Security has been stretched at Chitwan Prison after a group of inmates linked to rhino-poaching escaped. Of the 48 prisoners in the facility facing rhino-related charges, only 26 have been recaptured so far.
On the morning of September 10, inmates began fleeing the prison. In total, 409 escapees have been brought back, including the 26 rhino-related prisoners. The prison originally housed 744 inmates, and except for two individuals, the rest had fled during the breakout.
Prison Chief Ravindra Prasad Dhungana stated that authorities have been attempting to contact all escapees by phone, but 60 inmates remain untraceable.
Following the escape, Chitwan National Park has intensified its security measures. According to Information Officer Abinash Thapa Magar, a list of escapees has been prepared, and monitoring in surrounding areas has been heightened.
Given that some of the escaped prisoners were involved in rhino poaching and trafficking, the park authorities consider them a significant security concern.
