Gagan Thapa proposes Congress restructuring, says he is ready to resign as general secretary

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa has said he is ready to step down from his post as part of his proposal to restructure and rebuild the party in the wake of the recent Gen-Z movement.

In a detailed statement on the country’s current situation and future responsibilities, Thapa said the events of September 8 and 9 (Bhadra 23–24) had pushed the nation into a challenging political phase. He stressed that, despite the constitutional and political vacuum created, the party must act responsibly to ensure elections are held on time.

Thapa urged unity against all efforts to divide the party and the country, saying the sacrifices of innocent youths who joined the protests in pursuit of transparent and accountable governance must not go in vain.

Proposing a comprehensive restructuring campaign beginning on Constitution Day, he argued that sweeping reforms are needed in party membership, organizational structure, leadership selection, agendas, and working style.

“What we are doing now will not be enough to rebuild the party. For fundamental reforms, we must be ready to relinquish our official responsibilities and take new risks. For this, I am willing to resign as general secretary,” Thapa said.

He also condemned the recent attacks on Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba and party workers across the country, while calling on all levels of the party to support those affected by the protests.
