KATHMANDU: Thousands of devotees have gathered at the historic Krishna Mandir in Mangalbazaar, Patan, today to celebrate Krishna Janmashtami, the festival marking the birth of Lord Krishna.
From early morning, long queues of worshippers stretched across the temple square as devotees offered prayers, flowers, and sweets to Lord Krishna.
The 17th-century stone temple, one of the most prominent landmarks of Patan Durbar Square, has become the focal point of celebrations in the Kathmandu Valley.
On this occasion, the temple is adorned with traditional decorations, while priests conduct special rituals. Devotees also participate in singing, recitations, and prayers throughout the day. Many are observing fasts and will stay awake in night-long vigils (jagram), a custom closely tied to the festival.
Local residents say Krishna Janmashtami at Patan is not only a religious occasion but also a vibrant cultural gathering, drawing people from across the Valley and beyond. The temple square, a UNESCO World Heritage site, comes alive with worshippers, vendors, and musical performances, highlighting the deep-rooted tradition of Krishna devotion in the city.
