KATHMANDU: The Bhaktapur District Court has ordered the release of Milan Gurung, widely known as Chakre Milan, on bail of Rs 110,000 in connection with an assault case.
A single bench of District Judge Ram Prasad Neupane issued the order, allowing Milan to remain free during trial after furnishing bail.
The case dates back a year and involves charges of attempted murder. The Bhaktapur District Court had registered the case based on a complaint lodged at the Thimi Police Circle. Milan was arrested in Kathmandu and transferred to Bhaktapur shortly after being freed from custody in a separate case.
This marks a second legal reprieve for Milan within weeks. On August 13, the Kathmandu District Court had ordered the release of Milan, along with Jit Bahadur Lama and 17 others, on bail of Rs 30,000 each in a public offence case. The arrests had been made after police detained 47 people, including Milan, for disruptive public behaviour during his birthday celebrations.
Milan was initially taken into custody on August 1 after a joint operation by the Kathmandu District Police Range and the Valley Crime Investigation Office. The operation targeted individuals allegedly involved in criminal activities in Thamel and Maharajgunj.
During his birthday celebrations at Hotel Sambala in Maharajgunj, Milan’s entourage allegedly created a public nuisance, blocking roads with a convoy of dozens of vehicles. Police intervened after learning of the noise and disruption, arresting Milan and his associates.
Milan has long been under police surveillance due to his alleged involvement in criminal activities, including extortion, intimidation, and gang violence. His rival, Deepak Manange, is currently in prison. Police say that Milan and his associates had recently been frequenting restaurants and nightclubs in Thamel and Maharajgunj, engaging in threats, brawls, and extortion.
Despite multiple arrests in the past, Milan has repeatedly secured legal release. In 2017, he was arrested in Maharajgunj, and in 2022, he was recommended as a candidate from Gorkha Constituency-2 by the CPN-UML for the House of Representatives elections.
