Stranded Nepalis to be repatriated from China via Tatopani border

KATHMANDU: Around 200 Nepali citizens who were stranded in China following the destruction of the Miteri Bridge at Rasuwagadhi border due to a flood in the Bhotekoshi River will be repatriated to Nepal on Wednesday via the Tatopani (Zhangmu) border point.

The group had been left stranded in the Chinese town of Kerung after a devastating flood hit the Lhende River along the Nepal-China border on July 8, washing away the Miteri Bridge.

Nepal’s Consul General in Lhasa, Laxmi Prasad Niraula, confirmed that 203 Nepali nationals had been provided temporary shelter and support by the Chinese government in Kerung.

According to him, after diplomatic coordination between Nepal and China, arrangements have been made to bring them back through the Tatopani border.

“Some of the stranded Nepalis didn’t even have money for food or transportation to return home,” Niraula said. “Through coordination with the Foreign Affairs Office of China’s Tibet Autonomous Region and support from Chinese authorities, the group will be safely transported to the Tatopani border.”

Upon arrival at Tatopani, the Nepali citizens will be handed over to Nepali officials. The Consul General expressed gratitude to the Chinese government for promptly rescuing the affected individuals, arranging shelter, and facilitating their return.
