LALITPUR: The Politburo meeting of the CPN-UML is underway at the party’s central office in Chyasal, Lalitpur to finalize key proposals for the upcoming Statute Convention.
The meeting is focused on discussing and endorsing documents that will be presented at the convention. According to party leaders, the Politburo is expected to ratify the decisions made during the UML Secretariat meeting held last night.
The Secretariat has recommended reducing the number of office bearers from 19 to 15. Additionally, it has removed the age limit of 70 years and the restriction of two terms for leadership positions.
In a major structural change, the Secretariat has also decided to eliminate the Secretariat Committee altogether. Moving forward, the UML’s central bodies will comprise only three entities: the Standing Committee, the Politburo, and the Central Committee.
The newly proposed 15-member office bearer team will constitute the Standing Committee. These proposals will be formally tabled at the Central Committee meeting scheduled for July 21, ahead of their presentation at the Legislative General Convention.
Under the new structure, the party will have one president, one general secretary, one deputy general secretary, five vice chairs, and seven secretaries.
Initially, Vice Chairman and Coordinator of the Statute Amendment Committee Bishnu Prasad Poudel had proposed reducing the number of office bearers to 11, but the final agreement settled on 15 after further discussions.
Poudel had also proposed a 199-member Central Committee, but it has now been agreed to expand it to 251 members. One-third of these members—83 in total—will form the Politburo. Currently, the UML Politburo has 99 members.
