KATHMANDU: The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has urged residents living along the banks of the Bhote Koshi and Sunkoshi rivers in Sindhupalchok district to remain on high alert due to the risk of flooding.
The advisory comes after reports of possible heavy rainfall in the upstream areas of Tibet, China — which feed into the Bhote Koshi River.
According to a notification from Chinese authorities, particularly the local police bureau, intense rainfall is expected in the river’s source regions in Tibet until June 21, potentially causing a significant rise in river water levels.
The department has warned that the increased flow could lead to flooding in downstream areas, affecting several municipalities and rural municipalities including Bhote Koshi Rural Municipality, Barhabise Municipality, Tripurasundari Rural Municipality, Sunkoshi Rural Municipality, Balefi Rural Municipality, and Chautara Sangachokgadhi Municipality.
Authorities have called for heightened vigilance, preparedness for possible evacuation, and close monitoring of river conditions in these high-risk zones.
