Kathmandu Valley among areas at risk of flooding today



KATHMANDU: The Flood Forecasting Division under the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has issued a flood risk alert for 37 districts across the country, including all three districts of the Kathmandu Valley, for today (Sunday).

According to the Division, heavy rainfall is expected to increase the flow of several small rivers, raising the risk of flooding in districts such as Ilam, Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari, Dhanusha, Dhankuta, Bhojpur, Udayapur, Sindhuli, Khotang, Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Kavre, Tehrathum, Okhaldhunga, Makawanpur, Gulmi, Palpa, Salyan, Gorkha, Tanahun, Syangja, Lamjung, Kaski, Parbat, Baglung, Myagdi, Baitadi, Darchula, Bajhang, Doti, Dadeldhura, Banke, Bardiya, Kailali, and Kanchanpur.

People living near riverbanks in these districts are advised to exercise caution. The Division has issued a yellow alert for 14 districts, including Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Kavre, Dhankuta, Bhojpur, Udayapur, Sindhuli, Khotang, Lamjung, Kaski, Parbat, Baglung, Kailali, and Kanchanpur.

Meanwhile, the water levels of major rivers such as the Koshi, Narayani, Karnali, Mahakali, and their tributaries—including the East Rapti, West Rapti, Kankai, Kamala, Bagmati, and Babai—are expected to remain below the danger level for the next three days (until Tuesday), though fluctuations may occur. The Division has advised general vigilance in riverine areas during this period.
