Woman killed in Makhantol inferno identified

KATHMANDU: An 80-year-old woman has been confirmed dead in the fire that broke out early Wednesday morning at Makhan Tol, Kathmandu Metropolitan City-24.

The deceased has been identified as Bishnu Adhikari, a native of Kavrepalanchok, according to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Apilraj Bohara, spokesperson for the District Police Range, Kathmandu.

The fire originated from a mud-and-wood house belonging to Dayaram Shrestha and is believed to have been caused by a leakage in a cooking gas cylinder. The flames quickly spread to the adjoining five-storey concrete house owned by Rukesh Shrestha.

The blaze, which lasted for nearly three hours, was brought under control by 10 a.m. SSP Bohara informed that personnel from the Nepali Army, Nepal Police, and Armed Police Force were mobilized to contain the fire.

Six fire engines were used in the operation — two from the Juddha Fire Brigade, and one each from the Nepali Army, Lalitpur Metropolitan City, Ramhiti, and the Balaju Industrial Area.

Authorities have begun further investigation into the incident and a detailed damage assessment is underway.
