Nepal Teachers Federation urges local levels to stop threatening protesters

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Teachers Federation has called on local governments to refrain from threatening teachers participating in the ongoing Kathmandu-centered protest demanding the promulgation of the School Education Act.

The Federation issued a statement on Saturday after reports emerged that some local authorities had issued notices instructing teachers to return to work and had taken actions such as threatening, transferring, or pressuring principals and employees involved in the protest to resign.

The Federation, currently engaged in talks with the government, urged local levels to avoid such actions, emphasizing that the teachers’ movement has been peaceful and focused on securing long-overdue educational reforms.

Teachers from across the country have been staging protests in Kathmandu since April 2, pressing the government to introduce the School Education Act. The Federation emphasized that threatening teachers during an ongoing dialogue process could negatively impact efforts to resolve the issue through negotiation.

The protest, now in its 26th day, has drawn participation from a wide range of educators, including principals and staff members from public schools nationwide.
