House session to run daily as key bills, budget discussions loom

KATHMANDU: The upcoming session of the House of Representatives will convene daily except on Saturdays and public holidays, in view of the heavy legislative workload.

Speaker Devraj Ghimire proposed the daily sittings during a meeting with party chief whips at Singha Durbar on Wednesday, citing pressure to discuss pre-budget issues, the government’s policies and programs, the annual budget, and the much-anticipated School Education Bill.

The proposal has been approved, and the meeting schedule will be formally presented in the Business Management Advisory Committee meeting on April 25, according to Nepali Congress Chief Whip Shyam Ghimire. He also confirmed cross-party agreement to prioritize the School Education Bill once it is tabled.

CPN-UML Chief Whip Mahesh Bartaula added that top leaders are expected to address the first meeting of the session. He informed that the government will present its policy and program on May 2, followed by the passage of key bills, including the School Education Bill, which is expected to be passed shortly after its presentation.

A subcommittee working on the bill has committed to submitting its report by May 6, and leaders say preparations are underway to give the bill top priority.
