Teachers cut short protest amid fears of royalist infiltration

KATHMANDU: Public school teachers on Sunday ended their 19th consecutive day of protest earlier than scheduled, citing fears of royalist infiltration due to a demonstration by the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) in the same area.

The teachers, who have been staging daily protests at Maitighar Mandala demanding the prompt issuance of the School Education Act, dispersed before 11 am on Sunday after learning that the RPP had planned a separate rally at the site.

According to the protest organizers, there was concern that elements from the royalist demonstration could mix with the teachers’ protest, potentially disrupting their movement. As a precaution, the teachers called off their protest earlier than planned.

To prevent confusion and maintain order, the teachers’ protest committee had made it mandatory for participants to wear school uniforms and carry official identification.

The protests, which have continued along the Maitighar-Baneshwor road section for nearly three weeks, are pressing the government to table and pass the School Education Act, which teachers say is critical for clarifying roles, responsibilities, and job security under the federal system.

Organizers said that regular protests would resume on Monday, continuing the 11 am to 3 pm schedule.
