Teachers’ federation calls meeting amid ongoing protest

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Teachers’ Federation has convened a crucial meeting with a single-point agenda: the immediate issuance of a School Education Act that incorporates previous agreements made with the government.

The meeting is scheduled for Saturday at 3:15 pm at Ratna Rajya Secondary School in Baneshwor, following 18 days of sustained protest in Kathmandu.

The federation’s national committee, along with key officials from its affiliated professional organizations and mobilization committees at the provincial and district levels, are expected to participate.

The call for intensified action follows a two-hour meeting between Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and federation representatives on Friday evening. Federation Chairman Laxmikishore Subedi said the meeting, which began at 9 pm, covered the federation’s demands, the situation of protesting teachers, and the urgency of enacting a teacher- and student-friendly education law.

According to Subedi, Prime Minister Oli expressed willingness to move forward with the legislation after internal government consultations. Later the same night, federation leaders also met with Speaker Devraj Ghimire to discuss fast-tracking the bill in parliament.

“Our discussions with both the Prime Minister and the Speaker focused on accelerating the process to bring out a progressive School Education Act,” Subedi said.

Teachers from public schools nationwide have converged in the capital under the Teachers’ Federation banner, demanding a legal framework that ensures teachers’ rights, improves education quality, and honors past agreements. The ongoing protest has entered its 18th day, with the federation maintaining pressure for prompt government action.
