KATHMANDU: The protest by teachers, now in its 17th day, continues to escalate, with demonstrators blocking key roads in the capital. Led by the Teachers’ Federation, the agitation has increasingly disrupted daily life, particularly in Kathmandu.
The Maitighar-New Baneshwor road, a major arterial route, has remained blocked for over two weeks, severely affecting traffic movement in the area. The road closure has caused congestion along alternate routes including New Baneshwor–Anamnagar, Maitighar–Mandala, and Thapathali–Dhobikhola corridors.
Frustrated commuters say they are spending hours stuck in traffic due to the protest. “It’s been days since I’ve been arriving late to work,” said one office-goer near Thapathali. “The jams are getting worse, and there seems to be no resolution in sight.”
The teachers are protesting against the new Education Bill, demanding amendments related to job security, pension rights, and the structure of permanent appointments. Despite repeated calls for dialogue, no agreement has been reached between the government and the protesting teachers so far.
With public mobility increasingly hampered and pressure mounting, observers warn that the government must urgently seek a middle ground to resolve the deadlock before the situation spirals further.
