TIA to operate 18 hours a day starting today

KATHMANDU: Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) has begun operating for 18 hours a day starting today.

Previously, the airport had been closed for 10 hours a day for five months, from November 8 to March 31, to facilitate physical infrastructure construction as part of the airport’s capacity expansion.

The airport will now be open from 6:00 AM to 12:00 AM, according to General Manager Jagannath Niraula.

He mentioned that the construction of the linkway connecting the taxiway to the runway has been completed, while work on the parallel taxiway is ongoing.

The Air Transport Capacity Enhancement Project, under the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal, is overseeing the expansion work, which includes constructing a parallel taxiway on the southwest side of the airport, an international apron on the north side, and a hangar apron on the east side.

The project is expected to cost approximately NPR 15 billion to complete. Project Chief Dipendra Shrestha stated that 90 percent of the work has been finished so far.

Although the physical infrastructure work, which is primarily being done at night, is nearly complete, it will take about another year and a half to finish the entire project.
