Hospital constructed in Upper Mustang; lacks medical equipment and staff

MUSTANG: A five-bed basic hospital has been built in the Lomanthang rural municipality of Upper Mustang, but it is still lacking essential medical equipment and human resources.

The two-and-a-half-story hospital was constructed with joint funding from the rural municipality and the federal government under the Integrated Health Infrastructure Development Program.

The contract for construction was signed in the fiscal year 2078/79 BS, with the aim of completing the hospital within two years to provide health services to the residents of Upper Mustang.

However, the project was delayed due to various reasons, including the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 27-room hospital is located near Lomanthang town, in Lomanthang-5, and was built at a cost of Rs 71.9 million, according to Bikas KC, the Acting Chief of the rural municipality.

The hospital features an operation theatre, an X-ray room, a lab, a maternity ward, a pharmacy, and quarters for doctors and health workers.

However, Tashi Narbu Gurung, the Chairperson of Lomanthang Rural Municipality, pointed out that while the hospital building has been completed to provide basic health services to the people of Upper Mustang, it still lacks the necessary medical equipment and staffing.

Gurung emphasized that the support of both the federal and provincial governments is essential to make the hospital fully operational and provide health services to the local population.
