KATHMANDU: CPN-UML leader Gokul Baskota has praised Prime Minister (PM) Balendra Shah’s (Balen) address to the United Nations General Assembly, describing it as powerful and meaningful.
Prime Minister Shah addressed the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, USA, on Friday morning.
Praising the address, UML Central Committee member Baskota wrote on social media: “Prime Minister Balen’s address at the United Nations was strong, meaningful and powerful. Although I am not from the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), he spoke the feelings of the country, and I supported him with a happy heart.”
Addressing the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, Prime Minister Shah highlighted the impacts of climate change on Nepal, its long-term consequences, and the need for international cooperation to mitigate them.
At the beginning of his address, Shah said he had come from a country in the lap of the Himalayas with a serious warning about the threats humanity would soon face. He said he had to speak at the United Nations about the extraordinary scale of death and destruction.
“I wish I could stand here today to speak only of development, democracy, peace and the aspirations of a young nation. But instead, I have to speak of the vast scale of death and destruction,” Shah said.
He continued: “Of families waiting for their loved ones, but they will never return home. Of communities searching for their loved ones in mud, rocks and water, whose bodies may never be found.”
