Kulekhani Hydropower operating at full capacity

MAKAWANPUR: All three units of the Kulekhani Hydropower Station in Makawanpur are now running at full capacity, ensuring a stable electricity supply despite the onset of the dry season.

The first unit of the Kulekhani Hydropower Station is generating 60 megawatts, the second unit 32 megawatts, and the third unit 14 megawatts.

According to Tara Dutta Bhatta, head of Kulekhani Hydropower Station I, the units have been operating at full capacity since March 16, producing electricity for 14 to 18 hours daily, as needed.

The dry season significantly reduces power generation from river-based hydropower projects, leading to increased demand for stored water projects like Kulekhani.

Assistant Engineer Ram Kumar Budhathoki stated that the full-capacity operation is part of a load management strategy.

“We are generating electricity for up to 18 hours a day, and if required, we are prepared to produce power round the clock,” said Budhathoki.

The hydropower station has made a substantial contribution to the national grid this fiscal year. From Shrawan to Falgun of the fiscal year 2024/25, Kulekhani Hydropower Station I generated 81,209 megawatts of electricity, a significant increase from the 34,388 megawatts generated in the previous fiscal year (2023/24).

The consistent and efficient operation of the Kulekhani Hydropower Station is seen as crucial in managing the electricity load during the dry season, ensuring a reliable power supply to meet the nation’s needs.
