KATHMANDU: UML Member of Parliament Thakur Gaire has raised concerns over conflicting statements made by Energy Minister Deepak Khadka and Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) Managing Director Kulman Ghising, accusing them of spreading confusion regarding the issue of load shedding in Nepal.

In a Parliament session on Thursday, Gaire pointed out the contradictions between the two officials. Energy Minister Khadka had recently stated that load shedding had resumed due to a reduction in electricity imports from India, while NEA Managing Director Ghising had claimed that there would be no load shedding.

“The Energy Minister says that the time for load shedding has begun, yet the NEA Chief assures us there will be no load shedding. Such false and contradictory statements should stop, and the government must provide accurate information,” Gaire said, expressing frustration over the inconsistency.

Minister Khadka had made the comments on Wednesday, revealing that Nepal is currently importing 830 megawatts of electricity from India. He explained that with domestic production hovering around 1,000 megawatts, load shedding had begun to affect homes during the evening.

Khadka also mentioned that while load shedding had officially ended, power cuts were still occurring in industries. He further highlighted that sustaining electricity imports from India was becoming unsustainable for Nepal.

In response to Khadka’s remarks, Ghising categorically denied the occurrence of load shedding, claiming that there was no such issue in the country at present. He also criticized the Energy Minister for causing confusion with his statements during the parliamentary session.
