NMC seeks clarification from two KU Psychiatry doctors over alleged abuse

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Medical Council (NMC) has sought clarification from two senior doctors of the Department of Psychiatry at Kathmandu University School of Medical Sciences (Dhulikhel Hospital) following allegations of abuse and undue pressure on a first-year MD student who attempted suicide on February 16.

The NMC’s Professional Conduct Committee has asked Dr. Ajay Risal and Dr. Deepak Kunwar, heads of the Psychiatry Department, to explain why they failed to take appropriate action regarding the reported misconduct.

The Council had earlier recorded statements from both doctors and the survivor but decided to seek further clarification to determine the truth behind the allegations.

According to a Council member, four doctors from the department were previously suspended for a week as part of the ongoing investigation.

Additionally, Kathmandu University School of Medical Sciences has instructed the implicated doctors to refrain from any official duties while the investigation continues.

Resident doctors have demanded an impartial probe into the incident, alleging that similar cases have occurred in the past, including a suicide attempt by another student last year and a dropout from the program.
