Ncell to discontinue 2G and 3G services by 2027

KATHMANDU: Ncell, one of Nepal’s leading telecom service providers, has announced plans to phase out its 2G and 3G services in the coming years.

Speaking at the ‘Revitalizing the Telecom Industry’ program organized by the Society of Economic Journalists of Nepal (SEJON) in Kathmandu, Ncell CEO and Managing Director Jabbor Kayumov shared the company’s roadmap for transitioning to more advanced network technologies.

Kayumov revealed that Ncell plans to discontinue 3G services by 2025, followed by 2G services by 2027.

He noted that while the company is preparing to make this transition, challenges remain, as approximately 3.3 million 2G handsets are still in use across the country.

To support the transition, Kayumov stressed the need for regulatory measures to prevent the import of mobile handsets that do not support VoLTE technology.

“Many other countries have already moved forward with similar steps, and regulatory support will be crucial for a smooth transition,” he said.
