KATHMANDU: Sunil Lamsal, the father of Nepali student Prakriti Lamsal, has reached Odisha, India, demanding a fair and thorough investigation into his daughter’s mysterious death at KIIT University.

Prakriti, a student at the university, was found dead in her hostel room on Sunday under suspicious circumstances.

Sunil, who traveled from Rupandehi, Nepal, to Bhubaneswar on Monday, has expressed deep concern over the incident. Speaking to Indian news agency ANI, he stated that the police are currently investigating the case and that they are awaiting the postmortem report.

He alleged that both harassment and emotional blackmail were factors that led to his daughter’s death.

“We have received information that she committed suicide after being subjected to harassment and emotional blackmail,” he said.

Sunil has already met with the university authorities but claimed that the college administration has been reluctant to respond directly to the incident. He acknowledged that both the university and the police are assisting the family but emphasized the need for a fair investigation.

Prakriti’s cousin, Siddhant Sigdel, who is also a student at KIIT University, had reportedly mentioned a person in connection with the incident before the news of her death reached the family. ”

Siddhant did not directly tell us about Prakriti’s death, but he asked us to come quickly, so we left home immediately,” Sunil said.

A person has been arrested in connection with the case, and Prakriti’s phone, laptop, and diary have been handed over to the police for investigation. Sunil stressed that his only demand is justice for his daughter through a fair and transparent inquiry.

He also informed that preparations are being made to bring Prakriti’s body back to Nepal after completing all legal formalities in India. He is hopeful that the process will be completed by Wednesday.

Expressing his anguish over the treatment of Nepali students at the university following the incident, Sunil condemned reports of beatings, abuse, and intimidation of over 700 Nepali students who had raised concerns about Prakriti’s death.

“I have heard that the college administration has been harassing Nepali students with abuse, which is unacceptable. It is not right to turn away students when a crisis occurs. Justice should be served, not just for my daughter but for all Nepali students who have faced mistreatment,” he said.

The case has drawn significant attention, with the Nepali government also actively monitoring the situation to ensure the safety of its students studying in India.
