Nepal Police team sent to Odisha to investigate Nepali student’s death

KATHMANDU: A Nepal Police team has been dispatched to Odisha, India, to assess the complex situation following the death of Nepali student Prakriti Lamsal at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) University.

Foreign Minister Dr Arzu Rana Deuba informed on Tuesday that a two-member team of Nepal Police officers stationed at the Nepali Embassy in New Delhi had been sent to Odisha to investigate the incident and address concerns over the safety of Nepali students.

“We are continuously following up on the death of the Nepali student and the situation that has developed since then,” she said. “Two senior Nepal Police officers reached the university on Tuesday morning to assess the situation of Nepali students and ensure their safety.”

Rana further mentioned that she had spoken to the officers over the phone, instructing them to coordinate with Indian security personnel for a thorough investigation. She also directed them to assist Nepali students and work with the university administration to ensure their secure stay in the hostel.

“The Nepali Embassy in Delhi is actively engaged in diplomatic efforts. After our intervention, the university has appealed to students to return to the hostel,” she said. “Additionally, the university has publicly stated that action has been taken against staff members involved in misconduct against Nepali students.”

She assured that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Nepali Embassy in Delhi are closely coordinating with the university administration and Indian security authorities.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli also took an interest in the case, instructing the Nepali Embassy to take necessary steps to address the situation and ensure justice.
