Education for girls key to preventing early marriage: Madhesh CM Singh

JANAKPURDHAM: Madhesh Province Chief Minister Satish Kumar Singh has highlighted the ongoing prevalence of child marriage in the region, noting that many families living below the poverty line view early marriage as a way to alleviate the perceived “burden” of raising daughters.

He emphasized that poverty often limits girls’ access to education, which in turn increases the likelihood of early marriage.

Singh believes that improving access to education and raising awareness can play a significant role in combating child marriage.

Speaking at his official residence in Madhesh Bhawan, Janakpur, during a meeting with representatives from Just Rights for Children in Nepal, BASE Nepal, and a group of children, Singh emphasized that empowering girls through education would discourage early marriages.

He also addressed the misconception that educated daughters require large dowries, which often leads families to marry them off early instead of pursuing their education. He called for stronger support from authorities to combat this issue.

Chief Minister Singh further emphasized the importance of increasing awareness among guardians about the value of education for girls, pointing out that more girls are attending school, and women are excelling in fields such as medicine and engineering.

Additionally, the Madhesh government has ensured 50% female representation in government services.

On the occasion, Singh signed a commitment letter condemning child marriage, affirming that it is both a social and legal offense that must be eradicated.
