Govt directed to explain cement price hike within seven days

KATHMANDU: The Public Accounts Committee of the House of Representatives has instructed the government to investigate the reasons behind the recent surge in cement prices and submit a detailed report within seven days.

Committee President Rishikesh Pokharel highlighted the urgency of addressing the issue, stating, “The construction cost has also increased due to the hike in cement prices, and the relevant ministry must intervene as this surge appears unusual.”

The Ministry of Industry, Commerce, and Supplies has been tasked with conducting a comprehensive study to analyze the reasons for the price hike and presenting its findings to the committee.

In addition to addressing cement prices, the committee directed the ministry to establish a systematic approach to determine the prices of consumer goods and ensure its implementation.

The committee also raised concerns about power outages affecting industries, with reports indicating up to 12 hours of power cuts.

Pokharel noted that the committee has decided to seek an explanation from the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation regarding the extent and impact of load-shedding on industrial operations.

Today’s discussions included representatives from the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, and Supplies, the Federation of Contractors’ Associations of Nepal, and the Cement Manufacturers Association, who shared their insights into the factors contributing to the price hike.

The committee’s actions reflect growing concerns over the economic impact of rising construction costs and aim to ensure transparency and accountability in addressing these issues.
