Nepal-UK relations strengthened through century-long friendship: Dr. Koirala

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) leader Dr. Shekhar Koirala has stated that the Treaty of Peace and Friendship signed between Nepal and the United Kingdom in 1923 marked Nepal’s recognition as an independent and sovereign nation on the global stage.

Speaking at a program on ‘Nepal-UK Relations’ held at the British Parliament (Westminster), Dr. Koirala expressed his gratitude to the UK for acknowledging Nepal as a sovereign nation.

His remarks were shared by his Principal Private Secretary, Dinesh Chandra Thapaliya.

“I believe that today’s presence here marks the foundation of our strong friendship,” Dr. Koirala stated. “I am very pleased to be here to discuss our century-long relationship and thank everyone for their warm hospitality.”

Highlighting the growing people-to-people cooperation between Nepal and the UK, Dr. Koirala conveyed his appreciation to the British government for its ongoing support to the Nepali people and the sovereign parliament of Nepal, built upon this long-standing relationship.

“The long and distinguished service of Nepalese soldiers in the British Army, particularly the Gurkhas, is the cornerstone of our century-long friendship,” he said.

“Over 200,000 Gurkha soldiers served Britain in both world wars, many of whom sacrificed their lives. I am pleased that the British government has recognized and honored their dedication and sacrifice.”

Dr. Koirala also called for the immediate resolution of the legitimate demands of Gurkha soldiers, in recognition of their sincere service to Britain.
