Court defers Rabi Lamichhane’s case, places him in police custody

KATHMANDU: The Kathmandu District Court has deferred the hearing of Rastriya Swatantra Party chair Rabi Lamichhane’s case, placing him in police custody until proceedings resume.

Although Lamichhane’s statement regarding his alleged involvement in the Swarnalakshmi Multipurpose Cooperative embezzlement case was recorded on Sunday, the detention hearing was not completed.

District Judge Madhav Prasad Adhikari’s bench deferred the case, instructing the police to present Lamichhane again in court on Monday, according to court information officer Amar Bahadur Chand.

Following the court’s decision, Lamichhane was placed under the custody of Kathmandu Metropolitan Police at Bhrikutimandap. He will remain in police care until the conclusion of the ongoing hearings.

Lamichhane has been accused of misappropriating Rs 1.19 billion belonging to 690 depositors of the cooperative. The Kathmandu District Police Office had earlier recommended filing charges against him and 38 others.

Lamichhane’s legal troubles began with his arrest on October 18 in connection with a different cooperative fraud case involving Suryadarshan Cooperative.

He was recently released on bail from that case but faces further allegations regarding his role in the Swarnalakshmi Cooperative embezzlement.
